Iron and Vaginal discharge

  • Iron supplies oxygen to the vaginal tissues and maintains proper vaginal health
  • Adequate iron helps maintain the natural acidic environment of the vagina and hence, prevent the growth of harmful micro-organisms
  • Vagina is a very delicate organ. Sufficient iron ensures that the overall immunity of vagina is maintained
  • Collagen, a type of protein, provides strength and elasticity to the vaginal walls. Iron is needed for synthesis of collagen in our body

Normal

Deficient

  • Low iron level can lead to insufficient oxygen supply to vaginal tissues. This can, in turn, compromise the health and functioning of vaginal cells
  • Deficiency of iron weakens the immune system of the body. This makes women more susceptible to infections, which can lead to increase in vaginal discharge
  • Deficiency of iron can lead to imbalance in the vaginal pH. This can lead to growth of harmful bacteria and yeast, leading to increase in vaginal discharge
  • Low level of iron can reduce the synthesis of collagen, leading to weak collagen tissues and resultant increase in vaginal discharge

Provides 21 mg of iron everyday to women of reproductive age

As per WHO* Normal hemoglobin range for women - between 12-16 g/dl.
